I was born in Taipei in the 70s. The Taiwanese are an incredible people: spirited, educated, and cultured. The island is a mishmash of cultural influence, from Portuguese to Japanese to aboriginal. The Taipei night markets are a must-see. Every generation, from children to grandparents, crowds the brilliantly lit streets at 2 am, eating steaming minced pork noodles, clothes shopping, or consulting facial fortune tellers.
